Holidays in Friuli Venezia Giulia

A whole world of wonders.

Friuli Venezia Giulia in north-eastern Italy is proof that Italy still has places full of surprises. Between the Adriatic Sea, the Julian Alps and the Dolomites, this remarkable region offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes within just 200 kilometres: impressive mountain scenery, rolling hills, peaceful lagoons and the endless blue of the Adriatic, with the golden beaches of Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro.

Along the way, you will find the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Aquileia, Cividale del Friuli and Palmanova, as well as charming villages and the elegant squares of Trieste, Udine, Gorizia and Pordenone, which will become Italy’s Capital of Culture in 2027. Positioned on the border yet at the heart of Europe, the region has transformed its unique location into a rich cultural mosaic of peoples, histories, languages and flavours. This diversity is reflected in its cuisine and wine production, with the region’s white wines regarded among the finest in the world.

Friuli Venezia Giulia offers a wide network of cycling and hiking routes that invite you to explore its many different landscapes. Whether you prefer a relaxed family bike ride along the coast, a challenging cycling tour through the vineyards or a spectacular hike in the Dolomites and the Alps, there is something here for every taste.

A region of many contrasts

For outdoor enthusiasts

A highlight of the region is the Alpe Adria Cycle Route (FVG1), one of Europe’s most scenic cycling routes, stretching from Salzburg to Grado on the Adriatic coast. But there is much more to explore. Other outstanding routes include the Tagliamento River Cycle Route (FVG6) and the award-winning Pedemontana Cycle Route (FVG3), which has received the Green Award.

Hiking enthusiasts are equally well catered for. The Alpe Adria Trail is a long-distance walking route that links Austria, Slovenia and Italy, making it an ideal choice for anyone who enjoys exploring nature on foot. Whether you follow this trail, take a leisurely coastal walk, hike through vineyard-covered hills or venture into the Dolomites and the Alps, there is an adventure here for everyone.

A journey of discovery

Through UNESCO World Heritage Sites and cultural capitals

A trip to Friuli Venezia Giulia is a journey through European history. As a natural geographical border between different countries, the region preserves traces of its long past in the architecture and traditions of the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Aquileia, Palmanova and Cividale del Friuli, as well as in the art cities of Trieste, Udine, Gorizia and Pordenone. Gorizia, together with the Slovenian town of Nova Gorica, was the first cross-border European Capital of Culture in 2025, while Pordenone will become the Italian Capital of Culture in 2027.
