Ajaccio is first and foremost a magnificent gulf, wide and luminous, with the Sanguinaires islands at its northern tip, glowing red at sunset, and the fine sandy beaches in the city and around Porticcio in the south. Busy all year round, the capital of southern Corsica was the birthplace of the most illustrious of Corsicans: Napoleon Bonaparte. Don't miss the house where he was born, in the old town, or the Fesch museum, with its Titian, Bellini and Veronese works bequeathed to the town by Cardinal Fesch, Napoleon's uncle.
