Bastia

Capital of Haute-Corse

In the narrow streets of Bastia in northern Corsica, there's a hint of Italy between the ochre facades of the citadel and those of the old town with its Neapolitan-style clotheslines. The Tuscan coast is just across the sea, visible on a clear day. And Bastia, the island's former capital, was under the rule of the Republic of Genoa for four centuries. The picturesque old port is surrounded by Baroque nuggets and pretty secret lanes. Bastia is an excellent starting point for exploring the Cap Corse peninsula.
