Train journey through the USA

We are happy to organize your flight from Switzerland to New York and, on request, the transfer to the centrally located comfort hotel. Enjoy dinner with a fantastic panoramic view over Manhattan. 

Waking up in the city that never sleeps. You will explore New York City on an extensive city tour: Times Square, Ground Zero, Fifth Avenue, Empire State and Chrysler Building. In the afternoon, take a boat trip around Liberty Island and admire New York's landmark: the Statue of Liberty. 

Spend the morning strolling along Manhattan's idyllic High Line, a former overhead railway line that has been converted into a park with rustic modern works of art. In the late afternoon, your intercontinental train journey across the United States begins at the impressive Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station. The Acela Express takes you from New York to Washington. 

A city tour will show you the numerous government buildings from the White House to the US Capitol, and you will also visit the memorials of the founders of the American Republic. In the afternoon, board the Capitol Limited express train at Washington's Union Station and travel west overnight. Make yourself comfortable in your compartment; your multi-course dinner will be served later in the dining car. 

After breakfast, you will arrive in the modern city of Chicago, which you will discover on a city tour. Be enchanted by the city's incomparable skyscraper scenery, in particular the 527 m high Willis Tower, formerly the Sears Tower. During the afternoon, you will get to see the skyscrapers from a very special perspective: from a boat on the Chicago River. 

In the early afternoon, you begin your journey through the Midwest: The California Zephyr train first heads to Burlington, and from there through the vastness of the Midwest towards the Rocky Mountains. 

From the panorama coach of the train, you can enjoy a unique sweeping view of the Rocky Mountains. The train follows the course of the Colorado River, 300 km along, lined with steep red cliffs. Your train journey on the Caliphornia Zephyr ends in Denver, the capital of the state of Colorado. Gold and oil have shaped the history of Colorado's capital. It is therefore not surprising that Lower Downtown has the highest density of Victorian buildings in the country. On your city tour, you can explore the colorful ensemble of historic buildings, quaint stores, bars, cafés and art galleries at your leisure.

From Denver station, you depart on one of the most beautiful train routes in the world - a special train in a league of its own! First-class service and comfort are a top priority on board the Rocky Mountaineer. Sit back and relax: enjoy breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains from the panoramic carriage. Your train follows the Colorado River and soon passes through the Moffat Tunnel. Look out for pronghorns, deer and eagles in the wild gorges of Byers Canyon and Gore Canyon. Spend the night in the idyllic mountain village of Glenwood Springs, famous for its hot springs.

An unmissable and great sight: the bizarre sandstone formations of the 2'062 m high Mount Garfield. The rocks along the Colorado River rise ever steeper on top of each other and are increasingly dominated by the color red. No wonder, because you pass through the spectacular Ruby Canyon. Shortly before Moab, you catch your first glimpse of the geological rock monuments that have made the west of the USA so famous. Your train journey on the Rocky Mountaineer ends in the scarlet town of Moab.

On the bus from Moab, you embark on a discovery trip to Arches National Park. A majestic landscape with mushroom cliffs, rock towers, pinnacles and domes awaits you - not to mention the 2'000 natural stone arches that earned the park its name. Your destination for the day is the small town of Page in the far north of Arizona.

A magnificent natural wonder awaits you here: the Grand Canyon. The dimensions of this canyon are also impressive, with a depth of one mile, a width of 18 miles and a length of 277 miles. Your tour guide will take you to the most beautiful viewpoints in this national park before you reach Flagstaff in the evening. Say goodbye to the national parks of the West with a hearty steak dinner and travel on the Southwest Chief train to Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world. 

Discover Los Angeles and the stars who line Hollywood Boulevard on a city tour. Excursions to picturesque Venice and the surfer's paradise of Santa Monica are also included in the program. We recommend a walk through the Venice Canals, where romantic wooden bridges line the idyllic houses of hippies and millionaires. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious ice cream at Salt & Straw on the famous Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Today you will be staying in a comfortable hotel in Los Angeles, which is often seen on the big screen itself - how could it be otherwise in the movie capital?

The train ride aboard the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Oakland offers photo opportunities aplenty: the tracks wind along the spectacular cliffs high above the ocean for over 180 km! 

Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Prison Island and the Transamerica Pyramid - the noisy sea lions at Pier 39 enjoy this view every day. On a city tour, you will get to know the city of the flower children and programmers. After a final lunch together at Fisherman's Wharf, you will have some free time. Later, it's off to the airport for your flight back to Switzerland.
