Chur fascinates with one of the most charming old towns in Switzerland and offers a rich program of culture, culinary delights and adventure. A visit to one of the three regional museums or a guided tour of the town are highly recommended. Culinary highlights are provided by the most extensive network of restaurants in Switzerland. Adventure-seekers can get their money's worth with urban golf or on the local mountain, Brambrüesch.
Oldest city in Switzerland
Chur, the oldest town in Switzerland with a settlement history dating back over 13,000 years, presents itself impressively in its picturesque and winding old town. Particularly noteworthy are the Episcopal Castle, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the well-preserved historical buildings that characterize the charm of the old town.
Brambrüesch high plateau
Chur is the only city in Switzerland to offer the unique advantage of having its own summer and winter sports area directly accessible from the city center - and conveniently by cable car. A colorful alpine flora awaits you on the local mountain Brambrüesch in summer and a magical snowy landscape in winter.
Worth a visit
The former post office building in Chur not only impresses with its architecture, but also serves as a cultural highlight of the city. Right next to it is the contemporary municipal library. The center and the car-free old town are also lined with numerous inviting cafés that invite you to linger and relax.
Active in Chur
Here's an excursion tip for hikers, walkers and cyclists: start your tour by crossing the “Pardisalbrücke”, a 91-metre-long suspension bridge that connects Chur with Haldenstein over the Rhine. Take line 2 to the Obere Au stop. From there, stroll past the ice rink to the banks of the Rhine and on to the new Rhine bridge. Cross the bridge and follow the path on the other bank to Haldenstein, where you can discover the impressive castle and fascinating castle ruins. You can easily get back to Chur on line 3 from Haldenstein. For cyclists, the “Chur Rhine Route” offers a picturesque route that leads directly out of the city center and runs through idyllic villages as well as along the Rhine and other rivers.
