Highlights

Europe's highest open-air cogwheel railroad runs from Zermatt to the Gornergrat. The train crosses impressive bridges and travels through countless galleries and tunnels up to the 3,089 m high Gornergrat. From the viewing platform, you have an overwhelming 360° panoramic view of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and 28 other snow-capped peaks rising above 4,000 m.
Of course, Zermatt is world-famous for its winter sports. But a trip to Zermatt is also worthwhile in summer. You can hike, cycle, climb, play golf, relax and breathe the fresh air, and much more besides.

And those who want to party during their citytrip will get their money's worth all year round, as Zermatt is by no means sleepy. Bars, clubs and discos are always in season in this year-round vacation region. Discover wild animals up close. Summer or winter, it's no problem in the Zermatt wilderness. Whether it's deer, ibex, marmots or roe deer, there's something for everyone.
Fendant is the best-known Valais wine, made from Chasselas grapes. It's a fruity wine that goes perfectly with fondue or raclette.
No Ferraris and no loud engines, because Zermatt is car-free except for a few electric cars. So there's nothing better than traveling by train, or more correctly by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. An extremely attractive journey on the highest cogwheel railroad in Europe, surrounded by the highest mountains in Switzerland, such as the Weisshorn or the Täscherhorn.

Of course, you can also plan a longer city trip and travel to Zermatt on the Glacier Express from St. Moritz, Davos or Chur.

Insider Tips

Little Matterhorn

Be sure to visit the glacier palace on the small Matterhorn (3820 metres above sea level). A fantastic world of ice and snow with a very special atmosphere. You reach the palace through an ice tunnel 15 metres below the surface of the glacier.

Zermatt Unplugged

You should be there once in your life: Unplugged in Zermatt, every 2nd week in April, because there are 14 stages and over 80 concerts on the Matterhorn; blues, jazz, classical, pop, everything is represented. So book a hotel quickly so that you don't miss this unique event at the foot of the Matterhorn.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

The highest cable car and summit station in Europe is located at 3883 metres. If you want to go higher, the summit lift will take you to the viewing platform, where you will be rewarded with a 360° panoramic view of the Alpine giants. For a small fee, you can take the crystal cabins from Trockener Steg to the summit, an unbeatable experience. Gornergrat

From the Gornergrat, you can enjoy the most magnificent view of the majestic Matterhorn and 28 other four-thousand-metre peaks, including the imposing Dufourspitze and the Dom. The 360-degree panoramic view also extends over the Gorner Glacier, the second largest glacier in the Alps, and far into the surrounding valleys.

The interactive exhibition for young and old offers completely new perspectives on the impressive mountain world and allows you to experience it up close. You can soar virtually over high alpine glacier landscapes with a paraglider and get very close to the real Matterhorn with a digital telescope. The adventure world on the Gornergrat promises this and much more. Admission is included in the Gornergrat Ticket.

Golden Spot

The new photo point on the Gornergrat in front of a unique mountain backdrop. The historic locomotive 3003 - one of the three locomotives of the first generation of the Gornergrat Railway - has been repaired and gilded. On the 130-metre-long themed trail, you can find out exciting information about the discovery of the Gornergrat, the pioneering work in the construction of the cog railway and the history and development of the Gornergrat Bahn. With the Matterhorn in the background, the locomotive is the perfect subject for your souvenir photo. The theme trail is free of charge and open all year round.

NostalChic Class

Experience the Gornergrat in a nostalgic carriage from 1961 with attention to cosy details in an exclusive way. A tour guide will lead you through the day trip, telling you exciting stories from the region. A window seat for the most beautiful view is guaranteed and the culinary experience is provided by fine Swiss cuisine with fresh, local ingredients and exquisite wines. Meet the Sheep

Gehen Sie mit den Schwarznasenschafen auf Tuchfühlung. Mit ihren spiralförmigen Hörnern, ihrem wuscheligen Fell und den schwarzen Flecken sind diese Schafe etwas ganz Besonderes. Von Ende Juni bis Mitte September weiden rund 150 Schwarznasenschafe zwischen den Stationen Gornergrat und Riffelberg. Sie halten sich gerne an schattigen Plätzen auf, da es ihnen in der Sonne zu heiss ist – dank GPS-Trackern in den Halsbändern können Sie die Schafe mit Ihrem Handy orten. Begleitet werden die knuffigen Vierbeiner von einer Hirtin, welche an sechs Tagen die Woche spannende Geschichten aus ihrem Alltag erzählt und gerne Fragen beantwortet. Auf dem Themenweg «Meet the Sheep» erfahren Sie an 11 Posten zwischen dem Gornergrat und Riffelberg spannende Infos über den Gornergrat, Flora, Fauna und die Tiere.
