Düsseldorf offers the perfect blend of the urbanity in a modern metropolis and the coziness in a village. The unique location on the Rhine adds a special quality of life and influences the relaxed flair of the city. Luxury shopping and trendy districts coexist, art and culture are omnipresent and bear witness to a lively and diverse creative scene.

Diversity to experience

At the heart of the city lies the old town, a true paradise for connoisseurs with its numerous bars and restaurants, renowned for its Altbier, the famous top-fermented beer. Lovers of architecture can find a fascinating mix of historical and modern buildings that constantly open up new perspectives. Parks and gardens invite you to relax, while the Japanese quarter «Little Tokyo» offers a touch of Asia with its exotic stores and restaurants. Top-class exhibitions and shows and, of course, events such as the Christmas market are a delight all year round.

The birthplace of the Altbier - Düsseldorf's old town

There is no talking about pub culture without mentioning the heart of Düsseldorf. With over 250 bars, pubs and restaurants in the old town, the heart of Düsseldorf, the choice couldn't be greater. Real craft beers were being brewed in Düsseldorf long before the term became popular. The name “Altbier” refers to the brewing process, which dates back to a time when technical cooling facilities were not yet available. Today, there are five home breweries brewing this traditional Düsseldorf specialty.

A city shaped by creativity

The Düsseldorf Art Academy currently ranks among the most renowned universities of its kind. It is therefore no surprise that numerous contemporary artists are associated with Düsseldorf. Art can be found all over the city - not only in the six large museums with a focus on modern and contemporary art. Murals and graffiti, created by a multitude of creatives, can be found in urban spaces as well as private collections and galleries. There are even six stations on the Wehrhahn subway line designed by artists.

From March 15 to August 10, 2025, the K20 of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is offering a special highlight: the magical imagery by Marc Chagall, one of the most fascinating artists of modernism, will enchant all visitors.

Cuisine from the Rhineland and Japanese specialties

When it comes to food, the city is also a culinary El Dorado, as all visitors can experience for themselves on a stroll through Carlsplatz. Anyone strolling through the alleyways with an appetite will not be hungry for long: In addition to traditional Düsseldorf home cooked food, visitors can also discover international dishes. There is nowhere else in Europe where Japanese life is so concentrated in one district like in Little Tokyo. Excellent restaurants and pubs serve authentic Japanese cuisine. A visit to one of the breweries, where typical Rhenish dishes are served, is also a must.

An Eldorado for shopping fans and fashionistas

Düsseldorf and fashion - they simply belong together. Which is not surprising: all the big names have their flagship store on Königsallee, the famous luxury shopping street. But the young scene of course has its own promenades. Around Lorettostrasse in the Unterbilk district, hipsters stroll through second-hand stores and small boutiques, stationery stores, flower stores and chocolate stores. And perhaps they are also drawn to Ackerstrasse in Flingern, which with its side streets is another center for beautiful things.

Sustainably on the move in the «largest village by the Rhine»

Sustainability is a top priority in Düsseldorf: The city offers numerous environmentally friendly options for making a conscious decision during your stay. Visitors can discover the green side of Düsseldorf by bike or on foot, go on sustainable city tours and enjoy regional, seasonal and vegan delicacies in restaurants. Shopping opportunities with a focus on sustainable fashion and fairly produced products are also available.

Architectural icons from origins to the future

The architectural diversity of Düsseldorf is impressive, combining historical and modern elements in a small area and offering an exciting interplay of architecture. From the medieval Lambertus Church in the old town to the baroque Benrath Palace and the MedienHafen, characterized by Frank O. Gehry's buildings, you will find a multitude of interesting architectural highlights. One unique building in all of Europe is the KII, which boasts the largest green façade to be found in Europe.
