Moulin Rouge! The Musical: The spectacular musical experience

The multi-award-winning Broadway hit Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing in Switzerland for the first time as part of its first world tour, starting on January 21, 2026, at Theater 11 in Zurich. The dazzling world of Moulin Rouge! The Musical combines boundless excess, romance, and sparkling beauty. Bohemians and aristocrats celebrate together and let themselves be carried away by the electrifying atmosphere. Baz Luhrmann's legendary film is presented live on stage as a spectacular musical experience—a dazzling feast for the senses that celebrates truth, beauty, freedom, and above all, love.

The story

The musical is set in Paris in 1899, a world of lavish beauty and unparalleled extravagance, of bohemians and aristocrats, but also of vice and sin. It tells the story of Christian, a lovesick writer, and Satine, the dazzling star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub. When their lives collide at the Moulin Rouge, they fall in love, but are prevented from being together by the host and the Duke of Monroth. Monroth, the club's wealthy and demanding patron, believes he can buy anything he wants, including Satine. Together with his bohemian friends, Christian stages a musical spectacle to save the Moulin Rouge and win Satine's heart.

The songs

Moulin Rouge! The Musical features many of the iconic songs from the 2001 film, as well as new additions by music supervisor, orchestrator, and arranger Justin Levine. He combines over 70 songs by various artists into a unique pop score that is firmly rooted in the characters and stories of the play. Get ready for an unprecedented musical extravaganza.

The success

Moulin Rouge! The Musical won ten Tony Awards in 2021, including Best Musical, as well as an Olivier Award, two Drama League Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Musical, five Drama Desk Awards and ten Outer Critics Circle Award Honour Citations, including New Broadway Musical.
