Africa's greatest train journey takes you over 6,100 kilometres through the south and east of the continent. The route connects the Cape of Good Hope with the tropical coast of East Africa, passes through the undeveloped wilderness of northern Zambia and to natural wonders such as the Victoria Falls and the Rift Valley.

Africa with all senses

A gentle jolt, a soft rattle - and Africa begins to unfold outside the window. Travelling by Rovos Rail means slowing down the pace of time and returning to an era when being on the road was itself the greatest adventure. From Cape Town, the pearl on the Atlantic, to exotic Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean, a train journey of almost three weeks spans from the south to the east of the African continent - full of wild nature, colonial history and pure luxury.

A palace on rails

As soon as you enter the mahogany-panelled lounge, it feels like you're stepping back in time. No hectic railway station, no security check - just doormen in uniform, glasses of champagne and a stylish welcome.

The suites at the Pride of Africa offer the highest level of comfort and are reminiscent of the elegance of times gone by. There are three categories - Pullman, Deluxe and Royal Suites - all stylishly decorated with fine woods, carpets and classic furniture. The Rovos Rail is not a means of transport, it is an experience. A boutique hotel on wheels that combines the charm of the colonial era with timeless comfort.

The wilderness passes by - and you are right in the middle of it

The route from Dar es Salaam to Cape Town is one of the most spectacular train journeys in the world. Covering around 6,000 kilometres, the Pride of Africa crosses five countries in 15 days: Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. The journey leads through breathtaking landscapes - from the savannahs of East Africa to the Zambezi River and the dramatic gorges of the Great Rift Valley. Highlights of the trip include a visit to the Victoria Falls, safari excursions in national parks (Madikwe and Chobe) and cultural stops in historic towns. A unique combination of adventure, luxury and African diversity.

Pleasure at the highest level

The dining car doesn't just serve, it celebrates: South African wines, seasonal specialities, classic cuisine with a modern twist. The clink of cutlery, the soft clink of glasses, the gentle rocking of the train - even lunch becomes a ceremony.

In the evening, the conversation in the lounge crackles as night falls over the steppe outside. Perhaps a fellow traveller is sharing her story of Kilimanjaro or a ranger is talking about the tracks of the Big Five - here the stories of people are combined with the history of the country.

A continent with many facets

Travelling with Rovos Rail doesn't just mean travelling through Africa - it means experiencing the continent with all your senses. Secure your place now for a journey in August 2025 or for 2026 with a German-speaking tour guide and doctor on board. It is a tribute to slowness, a celebration of discovery, a journey through time and a modern fairy tale all in one. For all those who not only want to arrive, but really want to travel.
