Insider Tips

Beach chairs

You couldn't imagine Sylt without its beach chairs. Today, there are around 12,000 of them. At the end of the 19th century, they spread rapidly across the German beaches of the Baltic and North Seas. Designed as beach furniture for one, two or three people, with a typically blue and white striped design, they are equipped with all the comforts you need: soft cushions, armrests, folding sunshade, extendable footrests, folding table, glass holder, side pockets, storage space... for sunbathing in a seated or reclining position, protected from the wind, flying sand and prying eyes. Sylt's beach chairs are just like the island itself - irresistibly chic!

Guided tour of the Wadden Sea

Discover the unique ecosystem of the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a guided tour. These guided tours are offered regularly at various locations on the east coast of Sylt, in German and English. Follow the guide through the Watt, equipped with the essential rubber boots (which can be rented), into the fascinating world of sandbanks and salt marshes. He'll tell you all about the tiny creatures that inhabit the watts, from crabs and mussels to the famous earthworm.

Sansibar in Rantum

What makes Sansibar the most popular beach restaurant in Sylt, if not the most famous on the North Sea? On the face of it, this former beach hut is nothing out of the ordinary, yet for years it has been attracting a trendy clientele and many visitors curious to unravel the mystery of the Sansibar ‘myth’. Of course, they come for the magic of the place, between the dunes and the sea. For its simple, delicious cuisine. It also owes its reputation in particular to the owner's attentive welcome - and to his business sense. After all, Herbert Seckler has turned Sansibar into more than just a restaurant: it's a brand whose crossed swords logo is practically the emblem of Sylt!

Getting around by bike

200 km of cycle paths and a wide choice of cycling routes: cycling in Sylt is a real pleasure! Discover the many facets of this island on a tour of almost 30 km through moorland and dunes: from Westerland, the bustling miniature capital, to Keitum, a village with chic, authentic charm, via Kampen, where luxury and nature are in perfect harmony. Take a break in Kampen. To the west, you can enjoy the unique view of the red cliff over the immense beach, and to the east, the famous Kupferkanne café awaits you with its delicacies. In Keitum, the Frisian House, a museum, will give you an insight into life on the island in the 18th century. This tour is just like the island itself: a generous dose of nature with a pinch of chic, culture and gastronomy.

Café Kupferkanne in Kampen

The history of the Kupferkanne café in Kampen is unique. At the end of the war, after the surrender, naval officer Günter Rieck was given a half-buried anti-aircraft bunker. Rieck was also a sculptor and turned the bunker into his artist's studio. It wasn't long before the first friends came in for a glass of wine, and in 1950 the studio became ‘Die Kupferkanne’. Today, it's a legendary address. Nestling in a charming pine landscape with a view of the Wadden Sea, you can enjoy a freshly roasted coffee accompanied by a delicious cake baked every day, in summer on the garden terrace and in winter in front of the open fire.
